CPD for Lawyers: 1 Substantive Hour

On September 10, 2025, the Canada Revenue Agency (“CRA”) unveiled significant revisions to its Voluntary Disclosures Program (“VDP”), impacting both income tax and GST/HST. These new measures, effective for disclosures initiated on or after October 1, 2025, are designed to encourage more non-compliant taxpayers to come forward and correct past tax mistakes. The shift toward a more accessible and flexible approach reflects the CRA’s intention to reverse the decline in VDP applications observed in recent years.

Join members of our Tax Group for a detailed review of the updated VDP. Whether you are a taxpayer, a tax professional or simply looking to stay informed, this session is designed to equip you with the tools and knowledge necessary to respond confidently to Canada’s evolving tax disclosure requirements.

Topics include:

  • The CRA’s redefining of "voluntary" disclosures, including the introduction of a new “prompted disclosure” category
  • Clear guidelines regarding the number of years that must be disclosed
  • Enhanced provisions for interest relief available to accepted disclosures
  • Confirmation that taxpayers may make a second voluntary disclosure addressing a separate issue from their initial disclosure
  • Practical considerations and areas of potential risk and uncertainty under the revised program
