Steve Hundal is an intellectual property lawyer and a registered patent and trademark agent in Canada. Having worked as an engineer before moving into law, Steve has invaluable insight into technology and client relationships. He leverages his technical and legal knowledge to provide his clients with strategic advice on their intellectual property matters, aligning their IP strategies with business goals.

Steve’s practice focuses on IP, including the prosecution, acquisition and licensing of patents, industrial designs, trademarks and copyrights. He regularly prosecutes patent applications in various high-technology, pharmaceutical and mechanical fields, including fintech, medical devices, automotive, telecommunications and the Internet of Things.

Steve is skilled at preparing patentability and freedom-to-operate opinions, and he advises on patentability, IP validity and infringement, and trade secret protection programs. In addition, Steve conducts IP due diligence on complex corporate transactions, and he routinely advises on related matters, such as employee IP, open source software, IP encumbrances, IP strategy and trade secret protection.

Steve’s depth of experience also includes drafting, negotiating and reviewing a variety of commercial and IP contracts, including IP license agreements, master services agreements, transition services agreements, joint development agreements, non-disclosure agreements and IP assignment agreements.

Steve previously worked at a leading Canadian IP boutique firm. Prior to legal practice, Steve worked as an engineer, gaining extensive international experience in the telecommunications sector, where he led software launches for carriers in locations such as Ireland, Romania, Germany, and Canada. While working at a global design and technology consultancy company, Steve oversaw the ongoing support of the e-commerce platforms for some of Canada's leading e-retailers.

Steve is a frequent author and speaker in IP panel discussions.

Representative Matters

Represented Pollitt & Company Inc., in connection with its brokered private placement for Playgon Games Inc., a proprietary SaaS technology company that delivers mobile, live-dealer technology to online gaming operators globally.

Acted as legal counsel to San Cristobal Mining Inc., a private mining company formed under the laws of British Columbia, in its acquisition of Minera San Cristóbal S.A. and all associated assets from Sumitomo Corporation, as well as a related equity financing and two debt financings.

Represented Wynnchurch Capital, L.P. as Canadian counsel in connection with its majority ownership acquisition of FloWorks International, LLC.

Legal counsel to MediPharm Labs Corp. (TSX:LABS) in its acquisition of VIVO Cannabis Inc. 

Represented Linamar Corporation (TSX: LNR) in connection with its acquisition of the Salford group of companies for an aggregate purchase price of $260 million.
