Tax – Canada

Jack Bernstein is one of Canada’s preeminent tax lawyers and an authority on multijurisdictional matters. He is Chair of the Aird & Berlis International Tax Group and a senior member of the firm’s Tax Group, Tax Litigation Group and Mergers & Acquisitions/Private Equity Group. Jack is well known in international tax planning, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, reorganizations, and financing. Jack is experienced in dealing with public and private corporations and has advised hedge funds, venture capital funds and real estate funds. He also has extensive expertise in cross-border estate planning and frequently advises international clients on doing business in Canada.

Barbara Worndl is former Practice Group Leader of the Aird & Berlis Tax Group. Her practice is focused on income tax with an emphasis on corporate and partnership taxation, particularly in an international and cross-border context. She has extensive experience in structuring cross-border mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations. Barbara's practice includes advising on structures for real estate investments and divestitures, derivative transactions, REITs and syndications. She also has experience dealing with the resolution of tax disputes, including transfer pricing. Clients appreciate Barbara’s dedication to finding the most tax efficient structures for their business.

Telecoms, Media & Broadcasting – Canada

Stephen Zolf is a member of the firm’s Telecommunications and Sports & Media Groups. His deep understanding of the legal and regulatory framework in the Canadian communications sector enables him to guide clients in implementing new business models in the Internet environment of rapidly evolving digital distribution networks and platforms. Stephen has advised telecommunications clients on the CRTC’s regulatory framework for wholesale access to telecommunications facilities, including wireline facilities and mobile wireless services. His expertise extends to advising clients on merger clearance under the Competition Act as well as foreign investment in Canada under the Investment Canada Act.

Intellectual Property: Litigation – Canada

Trent Horne is a member of the firm's Intellectual Property and Litigation & Dispute Resolution Groups. A trusted advisor and strategist, Trent has been guiding clients to successful resolution of intellectual property disputes for 20 years. He has been certified as a specialist in all areas of intellectual property by the Law Society of Ontario and has appeared as lead counsel in a wide range of intellectual property matters at the tribunal, trial and appellate level. He has particular expertise in patent litigation in a variety of technologies, ranging from genetically modified plants to manufacturing equipment. Trent is also a registered trademark agent in Canada and is involved in trademark prosecution, summary cancellation and opposition proceedings.
