Ontario's Second Round Cannabis Retail Lottery: Navigating the Regulatory Landscape

Archive Now Available!

Jeremy D. Burke

Ontario’s cannabis retail market is set to expand with the government’s recent announcement that the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will issue 50 new cannabis retail licences. The 25 winners of the first lottery round have begun successfully building their brands, and on August 7, the application process for the second lottery round will open, giving another group of would-be cannabis retailers an opportunity to bring their vision to market.

As cannabis continues to be one of the most highly-regulated industries in Canada, and Ontario continues to rely on a licence lottery system, prospective cannabis retailers should be aware of lottery process requirements as well as what regulators are looking for when it comes to the application process and retail operations.

Join Jeremy Burke and Karen Fung, cannabis retail market experts, as they provide insight on how to succeed under the regulatory regime of Ontario’s cannabis retail sector.

Topics include:

Regulatory landscape and other legal considerations for entering the cannabis retail market

What are the lottery rules for round two?

What are the regulators really focused on when reviewing an application?

What are some lessons learned from the first lottery round and its winners?

What other compliance strategies may be relevant to prospective cannabis retailers?
