Angels Increasing Investments in Canada

Posted in News

The National Angel Capital Organization (NACO) released the sixth annual Report on Canadian Angel Investing Activity on July 13, 2016. The report outlined that 2015 was the third consecutive year of substantially-increased angel investment activity in Canada. It attributed much of last year's growth to increased follow-on deal activity, which more than doubled as compared to 2014. The report found that 32 Canadian Angel groups made 283 investments in Canadian startups in 2015, amounting to $134 million. The average deal size totalled $1.16 million, and total invested capital was up 48% relative to 2014.

The report highlighted the geographic locations of Angels and investments, with the majority (1109 investors, $105.6 million invested in 200 investments) being located in Central Canada. Western Canada (459 investors, $27.5 million invested in 65 investments) and Eastern Canada (85 investors, $0.43 million invested in 18 investments) also showed significant growth. The majority of funding (63%) falls within the information-communication technology ICT and life sciences sectors.
