A&B Real Estate Lawyers Help Dreams Come True for Habitat for Humanity Families

Friday, February 19, 2010

For the second year in a row, Aird & Berlis LLP lawyers Randy Hooke, Derek McCallum, Christie McNeill and Steven Pavlides and law clerk Kari Connell have worked diligently to help make dreams come true for several Habitat for Humanity families. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization which builds affordable homes in partnership with low-income families.

Our legal team, all of whom work in our Real Estate Group, has completed 13 closings to date, with more closings scheduled over the next few months. They provided their legal services to the families on a pro bono basis to complete the real estate closings, whereby the families acquired ownership of their homes from Habitat for Humanity.

"Aird & Berlis LLP is committed to helping the community," said Lloyd Cornett, Practice Group Leader of the Real Estate Group. "We are pleased to be involved with Habitat for Humanity for a second year and to help make home ownership a reality for the families involved in this wonderful organization."

Habitat for Humanity Toronto was established in 1988 and is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian organization that is transforming lives and our city by uniting Torontonians around the mission of eliminating poverty housing. The organization helps families who earn the homes they now call their own through 500 sweat equity hours they put into the construction of their homes and through their commitment to repay their interest-free mortgages. Habitat for Humanity provides a hand up, not a hand out, and gives families a dignified and sustainable break from the grips of poverty.

"We greatly appreciate the contribution the team at Aird & Berlis LLP made to helping make our partner families official home owners," said Karen Visentin, Corporate Counsel for Habitat for Humanity Toronto Inc. "The team provided an added sense of security and comfort to our partner families knowing that their legal concerns were in great hands and under control. For that, we are deeply grateful."
