Paige Backman is a partner and a member of the firm's Corporate/Commercial and Intellectual Property Groups and Mergers and Acquisitions, Technology and Licensing Teams.

Practice

Paige practises in the area of corporate/commercial law with an emphasis on privacy and information technology matters. She is experienced in structuring and negotiating technology transfers, acquisitions and procurement, divestitures, joint ventures, debt and equity financings.

Paige advises multinational to start-up entities in the areas of licensing, consulting services, subcontract services, reseller and distribution arrangements. She counsels multinational and domestic entities on compliance with Canadian privacy laws, including obligations on breach notification and processes surrounding complaints and investigations relating to breaches of Canadian privacy laws.

Paige also advises companies on compliance with U.S. revenue recognition issues relating to software based and consulting services arrangements, on open source integration and downstream licensing issues, cloud computing, and export control issues relating to technologies and on electronic commerce issues, including those relating to online contracting, consumer protection, obtaining and challenging .ca domain name registrations.

She advises domestic and international entities on export control laws, import requirements and regulations relating to controlled goods and counsels various not-for-profits and charities on structuring ventures, ongoing compliance, sponsorships and agency relationships.
